What is Airsoft?
Airsoft – a sport similar to paintball, but with usage of exact replica firearms, which makes the whole fun considerably more attractive. This equipment called BB guns in Anglo-Saxon countries is not considered as firearms within the meaning of our law (Act of 21 May 1999 on firearms and ammunition with the amendments introduced in the Act of 14 February 2004 amending the Act on firearms and ammunition and amending the Act on Government Protection Bureau – Journal of Laws of 2003 No 52, position 451, Article 8). They are considered as “firearms imitations”, available only for adults. Despite the fact, that such expressions as “firearm”, “pistol”, “rifle”, “shotgun”, “scope”, “reflex sight”, “vest”, etc. can be seen in the online store Taiwangun.com, it does not change the fact, that they imply a copy of respectively: firearm, pistol, rifle, etc. These expressions are used as a mental leap, used only for the comfort of the buyer and for maintaining the “climate”.
Replica firearms can be divided into different categories.
- Spring models: using manually tightened spring, which starts the air compressing piston. In general these are single-shot models, with the shortest range and lowest kinetic energy of the propelled pellet. They require a reload after each shot (tightening the spring), before the next one.
- Gas models: the pellet is launched by gas, which is stored in a special gasholder (most often the gasholder is located in the place of replica’s magazine). The advantage of these replicas is the possibility of convenient “loading”, that is complementing the gas in the gasholder. There is no need to reload after every shot, furthermore some of the models are capable of automatic fire. Models called Blow-back in English possess the function to eject the gas backwards, which causes the bolt to go backwards as well, just like in actual firearms. They are more expensive, but they offer full realism of the original.
- Electric models: called AEGs (Automatic Electric Guns) are equipped with electric engine, which tightens piston’s spring rapidly and strongly and what then allows obtaining high frequency and long range of shot. Thus in the case of AEGs, there is a possibility of single, semi-automatic and automatic fire.
The range of fire of ASG ranges in dependence on the model, the type of replica firearm and the way of generating gas pressure, which launches the pellet. It is a scope, ranging from 20 meters in the simplest spring models, to over 100 meters in the replicas of sniper rifles. To improve the accuracy of shot, Hop Up system was introduced. It causes the pellet’s rotation while leaving the barrel, which allows greater stability of pellet’s flight track and increases accuracy and range of shot. Majority of models currently available on the market possess this system.
