One of the biggest factors that will determine both your playstyle and your effectiveness on the battlefield is the range of your airsoft weapon. It will determine whether you can engage in open fields, it will determine whether you can shoot unsuspecting opponents from a long distance, and it will determine the accuracy of your shots.
So, how far can an airsoft gun shoot? Do different airsoft guns have different ranges? What's the difference between effective range and maximum range? What factors influence the range of a shot? In this blog post, we'll answer all these questions and more!
Effective Range vs Maximum Range: Why Both Matter?
When you read marketing for airsoft guns, you hear this phrase often, "BB shots from this airsoft rifle will travel a maximum distance of so and so", but just because the BBs can travel this distance, it doesn't mean anything to you when you're playing airsoft matches. You don't care about how long a BB can travel, you care about accurately hitting your target.
And that's what effective range measures: How long can a BB travel while maintaining reasonable accuracy? The max effective range is the measure you need to look out for when making purchasing decisions, and this is the measure that matters when airsoft guns shoot.
Factors Influencing Max Range of Airsoft Gun
There are several factors influencing the range of airsoft guns, and to truly understand both the nameplate range of the weapon you buy, and your effective range during airsoft matches, you need to learn about each one of these factors. Below, we'll go over them.
#1 The Power of the Gun
Predictably, the first and foremost factor in how far and how accurately a BB will travel is the power of your airsoft gun, typically measured in feet per second (FPS). More powerful guns simply have more juice to propel the BBs much further.
It isn't completely straightforward, however - there are a few things you need to consider when choosing how powerful your gun will be:
- Spring, gas, or electric: whether your gun is spring-powered, gas-powered, or electric-powered will impact its FPS. Gas-powered guns' BBs generally travel longer distances while spring-powered guns are considered the weakest. So, you need to keep in mind that If you're looking for airsoft guns that have effective ranges above a certain threshold, your choices will be limited.
- Safety: BBs above a certain weight and a certain FPS are not safe, and they're not only disallowed in most tournaments and airsoft matches, but they are also illegal in some countries. When choosing airsoft guns or upgrading your existing ones, you need to make sure you stay within safety and legal limits.
#2 BB Quality
The quality of the BB has a substantial impact on the effective range of airsoft guns, more so and in more ways than many consider:
- The weight of the BBs: the principle here is very simple - to propel a lighter and heavier BB the same distance, you need to apply far more force in the latter scenario. If you use heavier BBs in your airsoft guns, prepare to have a reduced effective range. Alternatively, if you want to give your airsoft sniper rifles a boost in range, you can buy lighter BBs.
- The shape of the BBs: The shape of the BBs not only impacts how fast do airsoft guns shoot, but they also impact the accuracy of the shot as well. As we explained above, effective range refers to the distance a BB can travel while maintaining relative accuracy, and by buying lower-quality BBs, you can expect your airsoft guns to shoot at a lower effective range.
#3 Weather
It is no surprise that weather impacts the effective range of airsoft BBs. It might be exciting to play an airsoft match during rain or snow, but you have to realize this also means your airsoft guns shoot at a lower effective range as well. The impact of weather is two folds:
- Impact on the BB: depending on the weather condition, once a BB leaves the barrel of the gun, it'll be met with wind, rain, or snowflakes. These represent a physical barrier in front of the BB, lowering the distance it can travel.
- Impact on the Gun: cold and hot weather both impact the gearbox of the airsoft gun, to lesser or greater degrees depending on how your gun is powered. It is no secret that gas-powered guns perform awfully during winter months and might not function at all after you reach a certain temperature. Impact on spring-powered and electric-powered guns should be minimal, however.
Effective Range of Different Types of Airsoft Guns
The shooting distance of different types of guns varies a lot depending on the type of the gun, with some excelling at close-range combat while others being excellent at longer ranges. Below, we'll go over the effective range of the most common types of airsoft weapons.
#1 Effective Range of Airsoft Pistols
Due to their shorter barrel length and smaller form, airsoft pistols aren't typically equipped with powerful gearboxes. The effective range of an airsoft pistol can be as little as 70 feet with higher-quality, more powerful airsoft pistols reaching around 80 feet. The max range is around 120 feet.
As airsoft pistols are primarily used as sidearms for close-quarters combat, their effective range is not very relevant when purchasing one. Nevertheless, you should remember that you can't use them in long-range combat.
#2 Effective Range of Assault Rifles
Assault rifles are the most common type of guns used during airsoft matches, and as they're designed for both close and medium-ranged combat, the effective range of the weapon will impact your performance on the battlefield.
Due to the fact assault rifles come in many shapes with different barrel lengths, gearboxes, etc., their effective range can vary quite a bit. A relatively small, bullpup submachine gun like the FN P90 will have a completely different range from an AK electric airsoft gun. Thus, the max effective range of assault rifles is between 100 to 225 feet, and their max range reaches as much as 260 feet.
#3 Effective Range of Airsoft Sniper Rifles
Airsoft sniper rifles are designed for long-range combat, and that's why the range is extremely important for these weapons. However, contrary to popular belief, due to safety reasons and limitations of typical gearboxes, sniper rifles don't have a max effective range that's very different from AK AEGs, for example. This means their effective range is around 150-200 feet.
However, you can tune and upgrade your sniper rifle to be more powerful, extending its effective range to as far as 350 feet. If you enjoy shooting from a long distance and getting a true sense of what using a sniper rifle feels like, you should consider upgrading.
How to Extend the Range of Your Airsoft Gun
If you already own an airsoft replica and don't want to shell out money to buy high-quality airsoft SMGs with a high FPS, you'll be limited in how much you can increase your gun's FPS, but upgrades are certainly possible on the margins.
How you go about upgrading your gun, however, is heavily dependent on how it is powered. For spring-powered guns, for example, fitting a heavier spring with more coils will help you shoot at a higher FPS, but this obviously doesn't work for a CO2 pistol.
One universal solution that can help you extend your range is getting lighter BBs - lighter BBs have their drawbacks: they're more impacted by the weather and they can be more inaccurate, but if you want to increase the range of your airsoft gun, they're an excellent solution that will help you shoot across long distances.
Range of Airsoft Guns FAQ
How Far is an Airsoft Gun Accurate?
How far a BB can travel while remaining accurate depends on a few factors. The FPS of the airsoft gun, the length of its barrel, the quality of the BB, and the weather conditions. Typical airsoft guns shoot BBs that can travel 100 to 200 feet while remaining accurate, but with upgrades however, the range can extend to 200 to 300 feet.
What Determines the Range of an Airsoft Gun?
The biggest determiner of the range of an airsoft gun is its power, measured in feet per second. The more powerful a gun is, the higher the FPS it can shoot BBs at, the longer its range. Tho, range alone can be a deceptive metric, because BBs don't remain accurate for the entire length of their journey. That's why it is also important to look at the effective range of airsoft guns, which is measured as the distance BBs can travel while remaining accurate.
How Far Does a 300 FPS Airsoft Pistol Shoot?
It can be hard to give a definitive answer since FPS isn't the sole factor that determines the distance an airsoft pistol's BB will travel, even if it's the most important factor. On average, however, using a typical 300 FPs airsoft pistol, you can expect your BBs to travel around 125 to 175 feet (electric pistols have a max range of 100 feet). Tho, their effective range will likely be much lower.
